The Byzantine Catholic Church in the United States generally traces its roots to Carpatho-Rusyn immigrants from Central Europe (the former...

“Almost a dozen houses of worship, including the late-19th-century Cathedral of the Holy Virgin Protection and a crumbling century-old synagogue, argue that they are dependent on donations and that including them in a landmark district would make simple projects like repairing a window or fixing a roof more expensive and bureaucratically time-consuming…”

Last month, The Local reported that Mary Help of Christians was on the market, as its congregation had dwindled to about 70 people. Meanwhile, on St. Marks Place, a church that came back from the brink of closing is, if not thriving, at least surviving. Father […]

500 Tasty Sandwiches: Grandma’s Kolacki →
500sandwiches: My grandma’s kolacki are my singular most favorite holiday food. Kolacki, Polish for crack cocaine – I read that somewhere – are not thumbprint cookies! Please, let’s get that straight. The dough is softer (pretty much butter and cream cheese with a suggestion of flour) and the fillings…

Vaclav Havel tribute tonight & this week at...
Vaclav Havel died on Sunday at the age of 75. I had the honor of meeting him once, in 2000 and stupidly didn’t think to ask for a photo with him. He was, however, gracious enough to sign a copy of his speech for me: Tonight, Bohemian Hall in Astoria is hosting a tribute to a great man. Details via Facebook: Bohemian Citizen’s Society of Astoria would like to honor the life, work...

Karczma (Greenpoint)
Had lunch here the other day - $8.50 lunch special included a stuffed cabbage, three pierogies, sauerkraut and a bowl of soup. Excellent food, fantastic atmosphere and just across the street from the Greenpoint Avenue G station. Opened in 2007, but somehow this was my first time visiting. Won’t be my last!
